MY STORY

What is Double Hearing Protection and When Would You Need It?

You might be asking yourself if double hearing protection is something you should be considering. In order to understand what double hearing protection is, let’s start by reviewing why it is needed. OSHA has Occupational Noise Exposure standards in the U.S. to protect general industry workers from experiencing hearing damage by regulating the amount of noise they’re exposed to on the job, requiring the implementation of a hearing conservation program and having administrative controls in place. For general industry applications including utility work, manufacturing work and service sector work, adhering to this OSHA standard can typically be achieved by using a single hearing protection device – be it ear muffs or ear plugs. This is because the attenuation of a singular hearing protection device is enough to ensure adequate hearing protection for the wearer. Double protection is necessary when the attenuation of a singular hearing protection device is not enough to ensure adequate hearing protection for the wearer.

Dude, Where’s My Hands?

Proper safety on the job starts with being aware of your surroundings. A key part of this awareness is knowing the environment and knowing what protective clothing to wear to be safe and compliant. Obviously, you can see and hear the car or forklift coming right at you, but without hi-vis clothing on, you can easily blend into the background of your surroundings. Most Hi-vis protective clothing covers our torso and legs, providing sufficient coverage so you can be seen against any background. However, at close range, other parts of our body are at risk of injury. Even when our hands are attached to us, we often can’t see them, which can eventually lead to them being cut or pinched by the machine. The Rise of Cut Protection Popular new thought in the safety industry is for workers to wear cut resistant gloves even in general work environments. This will give the worker added protection when they lose sight of their hands. With advancements in cut resistant fiber technology, there are now affordable hand protection options that offer cut protection. These are a great solution when we can’t see our hands. Just as effective as cut protection, we can even go a step further and provide additional protection – and no, we’re not talking about buying gloves with a higher rating. Instead, we’re referring to increasing the visibility of our hands. Hi-Visibility & Cut Protection As mentioned earlier, we wear high-visibility protective clothing so that we can be seen. So why don’t we wear high-intensity gloves? It’s a simple question. If our hands were more visible, we could keep them safe. When we work in machines and low light environments, it is easy to not see our hands because of the lack of light.

No Two Arms are the Same

When it comes to arm protection, you don’t have to settle for what’s already out there. Each work environment, task, and person provides a different set of variables that affect the type of protection required for the job. Those same factors affect the fit, feel, and function of the protection worn. Why should I use protective sleeves? If you’re already wearing protective gloves (or any PPE for that matter), consider why. Simply put, there is a risk for injury and good reason to prevent it. The same logic applies to sleeves. Do you have to reach into ceiling vents or around obstructions like an HVAC worker? Or are you handling large objects, such as sheet metal or even packages? Any task that presents the possibility of scrapes, abrasions, or cuts on your arm – anywhere past your glove – are environments where protective sleeves should be worn to help prevent costly injuries. Start with hazard identification to determine your specific safety needs. Our field sales team can work with you to analyze and consult on injury risks. You can even use your phone to take video of an operator working, upload it to Facebook, Instagram or YouTube, tag us in the post and we’ll take it from there. Protection needs With a hazard identification analysis (site survey), the protection needs are identified. This is the first step to developing the optimal solution needed for your given work environment and task. Enhanced with the right options Start with the top of the arm: several options are available to help keep the sleeve in place and prevent it from rolling down and exposing the arm.
